I, Brigitte Cushman, was raised in Tacoma, Washington, and lived in Fresno, California since 2002.
For 21 years she worked as a substitute teacher for Fresno Unified School District.
“Junior’s Dragon” is her first book which has been shared with students who enjoyed listening to it.
NOTES TO THE READER
Writing a story is like planting a seed in the ground to germinate into a plant. “Junior’s Dragon began this process first, as a tale about a little dragon told to children in my school district. They loved my character’s adventures in Dragon Land. Next, a stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis in 2017 with surgery to remove a growth made me rethink writing about “The Little Dragon Who Could.” A five-week period of rest helped make it more personal.
I met people on this journey to collaborate and develop this manuscript for self-publishing. James Whitfield, my illustrator with end stage renal failure, suggested the title change to “Junior’s Dragon.” Marcy Pusey edited the manuscript faithfully. She suggested Hynek Palatin to format the manuscript. Stephanie Dennie’s cover art of Junior on a skateboard (James Whitfield) was fantastic. She also drew three extra designs for the chapter art. Finally, Linda M. Weller fine-tuned till it was ready to self-publish.
My children’s audience in the district continue to enjoy and listen to “Junior’s Dragon.” Every child needs a book to treasure and love.
